This topic will examine the nature of electrical properties and charge transport in a wide variety of modern electronic materials, offering comparison between many material systems. From a materials perspective, the focus will be on inorganic or organic semiconductors, metals and metal oxides, material simulations and device modelling, while from an application perspective the focus will be on production and study of thin films and nanoscale structures with electronic functionality, covering the full range from continued miniaturization of existing device designs and adaptation to new materials through to novel devices exploiting quantum, single-electron or spin effects or new nanoscale materials such as self-assembled nanowires.

The topic covers the fundamentals of plasma and laser processing to produce multiscale morphological and chemical changes to the surfaces of metals, semiconductors or biomaterials to allow optimized optical properties for emerging applications as high efficiency solar cells, security, microfluidics, or to enhance the adhesion of proteins and cells for applications such as biomedical implants and lab-on-a-chip type sensors.

The topic covers new scientific and technological developments in the field of magnetic materials and spintronics. The topic includes diluted magnetic semiconductors and defect induced magnetism, novel magnetic and spintronic materials, interface magnetism, low dimensional magnetism, magnetism and superconductivity, superconducting-ferromagnetic-superconducting junctions, sensors, spintronic devices and magnetotransport, giant magnetoresistance, magnetic tunnel junction, spin injection and detection, spin generation and coherence, material simulations and device modeling, etc.

The topic covers new trends in spintronics based on alternative materials with enhanced potential of applications. It includes the field of oxitronics dealing with heterostructures based on functional oxide materials with multiferroic properties. Next generation spintronic materials such as topological insulators, Weyl and Dirac semimetals will be also addressed.

The topic also focuses on novel issues related to magnetization manipulation in spintronic devices with enhanced energetic efficiency: spin-currents in spin orbitronic devices, electric field, polarized photons and combined strategies.

Electronic memories are key elements of many electronic systems that take data storage (for example: mobile phones, iPads, computers, e-papers, etc.). There has been enormous interest in the use of organic materials, resistive memory devices, phase change materials, nanoparticles in hybrid organic & inorganic memory devices, molecules, quantised states, charge trapping  ferroelectric materials. The session will capture such new developments in these fields.
