Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dietrich RT Zahn (born 1958) studied physics at RWTH Aachen and received a PhD in 1988 from the University of Wales in Cardiff. After a post-doc period at TU Berlin he became Professor of Semiconductor Physics at the TU Chemnitz in 1993. His research interests focus on the spectroscopic characterisation of semiconductor surfaces and interfaces, ultra-thin films, and low-dimensional structures. He published more than 700 papers (h-index: 37; > 7000 citations). He served as speaker of the Thin Films Division of the German Physical Society and as Pro-rector for Research at TU Chemnitz. He is a member of the MERGE (TU Chemnitz) and cfaed (TU Dresden) clusters of the federal Excellence Initiative and speaker of the DFG Research Unit “Towards Molecular Spintronics”. He currently is Vice-president of the German Vacuum Society (DVG).
