Cluj-Napoca pedestrian city tour (A1)

Two hours walking tour through the historic center of the city, including visits to the main churches, squares and monuments: St Michael’s Gothic Church, Unirii Square, Franciscan Monastery, Museum Square.
Gothic, baroque and neoclassical styles mix together and offer a special feeling in Transylvania’s medieval capital.

Alba Iulia, the spiritual capital of Romania (B1)

Transfer to Alba Iulia city.
During the visit of the Old Town the tourists can stroll along the large streets of the citadel, to discover the interesting history, culture and architecture of Alba Iulia: the Roman Catholic Cathedral – the oldest architectural monument in Transylvania, the Orthodox Reunification Cathedral, the Babilon Building (National Museum of Unification), the Union Hall, the Apor Palace, the Princely Palace, and the University of Alba Iulia.
Last but not least, visit of the The Alba Carolina Citadel, the symbol of the city, built between 1714 and 1738 ordered by Carol VI, Holy Roman Emperor. It is considered to be the most impressive and one of the largest Baroque Vauban-type citadel in SE Europe, especially due to its triumphal gates that allowed the access into the big fortress.

Wonders of Nature (B2)

Visit of Cluj-Napoca surroundings:
First Turda Salt Mine – an amazing attraction, world’s largest salt mine museum, considered “The Coolest Underground Place on Earth” according to “Business Insider”; then head for the traditional Apuseni Mountains village of Rimetea – an architectural protected area surrounded by an impressive scenery.
Optional, if the time allows in the Apuseni Mts the spectacular Rimet Gorges and the peaceful Rimet Monastery can be visited. Hiking through Cheile Turzii National Park – a canyon located in Cluj county, averaging 300 m in height, a natural reservation, hosting more than 1,000 plant species, and 60 caves waiting to be explored.

Day 1

One of the main attractions of the region of Maramures are the wooden sculptures, part of houses and churches.

After driving through the former mining areas we will reach our first point of interest, Surdești.

The village is home to the highest wooden church in Maramureș.

Visit of the Barsana wooden church followed by accommodation and traditional folk show in Poienile Izei village.

Day 2

Itinerary: Poienile Izei – Viseu de Sus – Sighetu Marmatiei – Sapinta – Cluj- Napoca

Transfer to Viseu de Sus. Take your time to spend a few hours to enjoy a nice ride on the old Mocanita train. We will get to see untouched nature and friendly people, a place where wild animals still roam. One of the most interesting moments of the trip will be our meal, served right next to the river and steam locomotive.

The tour goes further to Sighetu Marmatiei (an impressive Memorial dedicated to the victims of communism may be visited here) and then to Sapinta village with its Merry Cemetery, an original way of celebrating life with humour, even after passing away. Visit to a local sewing and weaving workshop.

Day 1

Itinerary: Cluj-Napoca – Sighisoara – Sibiu

Leaving Cluj-Napoca for Sighisoara, small fortified city in the heart of Transylvania, visit of the well preserved fortified site: the Stag House, the Clock Tower, the Church on the Hill, the Venetian House, the Covered Stairs. Sighisoara (Schässburg in German) is one of the most visited cities in Transylvania, and offers an outstanding testimony of the local Saxons culture.
Transfer to Sibiu, tour of the medieval centre of Sibiu, one of Romania’s most attractive cities: the Large Square with Brukenthal Palace, Haller House, the Catholic Church and the Council Tower – symbol of the city; the Small Square with Luxembourg House, the Liar’s Bridge, the House of Arts; Huet Square with the Evangelical Church; and the Fortress street.
Considered in its earlier days one of the best fortified citadels in Europe, Sibiu retains and displays the testimonies of a glorious past, and offers the best mix between a medieval atmosphere and a modern outlook.

Day 2

Itinerary: Sibiu – Alba Iulia – Hunedoara – Cluj-Napoca

Transfer to Alba Iulia
Short city tour with the visit of Alba Carolina fortress (Guard Changing Ceremony – every day at 12:00 pm), the Roman Catholic church, the Reunification cathedral.
Alba Iulia’s landmark is represented by the Vauban-style fortress with seven bastions, star-shaped. It was built in the early XVIIIth century, after the plans of two architects: Visconti and Doxat de Demoret (the “Austrian Vauban”), who radically transformed the medieval fortress based on the former Roman castrum into a seven-bastion baroque fortress, the most remarkable of its kind in SE Europe.
Transfer to Hunedoara, visit the Hunyad Castle (Corvin Castle) the most important Gothic style secular building in Transylvania. Even though the castle is built in Gothic style, it has also Baroque and Renaissance influences, and was the place where Vlad Dracul (commonly known as Dracula, courtesy of Bram Stoker’s novel) was held prisoner for seven years.
The Hunyad Castle, a legacy of the Transylvanian Hunyadi dynasty, was included in the “10 most fascinating castles and palaces” list. Transfer to Cluj-Napoca

Day 2

Itinerary: Albac / Vartop – Chiscau (The Bear’s Cave) – Farcu (The Cave of Crystals) – Cluj-Napoca

Following a narrow, curved and picturesque road, transfer to Chiscau and visit of the Bear’s Cave (numerous bear skeletons, dating from the Ice Age, were found here).
Transfer to Farcu, visit of the Cave with Crystals, impressive for its beautiful, calcite crystals stalactites and stalagmites.
Transfer to Cluj-Napoca.

Itinerary: Cluj-Napoca – Bistrita – Campulung Moldovenesc – Moldovita – Sucevita – Gura Humorului

Leaving Cluj-Napoca, passing through Bistrita (one of the main seven Saxon citadels in Transylvania) on the way to Campulung Moldovenesc, in the Bukovina region; visit of the Wood Art Museum, a true encyclopedia of the universe of peasant life.

The tour continues with the sightseeing of the beautiful Bukovina region.

In the afternoon – visit of Moldovita and Sucevita monasteries, both churches with frescoes depicting Biblical scenes both on the outside and on the inside.
A visit to a black ceramics workshop included.

Dinner and accommodation in Gura Humorului.

Day 2

Itinerary: Gura Humorului – Voronet – Humor – Cluj-Napoca

Visit of the Voronet monastery, famous for its stunning and well preserved XVth-XVI th century vivid blue exterior frescoes, known as the Sistine Chapel of the Orient, and the monastery of Humor, one of the first painted Moldavian & Bukovina monasteries in the XVth century, small but shining bright among Bukovina’s treasures; both part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
